Playing Solo Jazz Piano

Jeremy has done a remarkable job of organizing the whole history of jazz piano in the book you now hold. It is concise and yet open-ended simultaneously. All of the important concepts and historical styles are here, and presented in a way that is thorough and that will also stimulate you to investigate, listen, experiment and have fun with the world of solo jazz piano.
– Fred Hersch

Playing Solo Jazz Piano is now in its second edition with additional chapters and video content for each example.

Reviews for “Songs of Rebirth”

Three great reviews of Songs of Rebirth have been released in recent weeks.

On his “Jazz Da Gama” blog critic Raul Da Gama wrote that “No discerning listener, no one who demands the very best in that art should pass over this recording for Songs of Rebirth is a masterly work with a freshness that is utterly alluring.” Read the whole review here.

On Richard Kamins’ “StepTempest” blog, Kamins wrote “Over all, “Songs of Rebirth” is an impressive program not for the trio’s technical prowess but for how they present each song, each one a story, each one told with wit, with emotion and intelligence.  Don’t shy away because there are “art songs”––embrace the musical adventure.” Read the whole review here.

In JazzTimes magazine, critic Andrew Gilbert writes that “The music is conversational in the best possible sense, as the trio interacts with unhurried self-confidence. The lyrics unspool as fully formed thoughts while the songs range widely and Harms makes it all sound utterly natural.” Read the whole review here (membership required).

Friendly reminder, you can get both the CD and a signed copy of a book of the music in my shop.

Songs of Rebirth Out Now!

Songs of Rebirth has been my passion project for over two years now.

I started writing the music during the height of lockdown in the summer of 2020 while I wondered what the future would hold for me and for the world. It was comforting to create music based on the traditions of rebirth from mythology, poetry, science, and literature.

When composing this music I vowed to write exactly what I felt without being influenced by what might be “cool” or “in vogue.” The resulting songs are really honest reflections from that tenuous moment, equally full of hope and uncertainty, humor and melancholy.

There are two ways you can explore this music:

1) Listen!

The most important way you can support my work is to listen. I don’t create this music for money, fame, or glory. I create it for people to enjoy, reflect upon, and sit with. That means, I create it for you! Click the link below for access to Songs of Rebirth on your favorite platforms.

2) Support the Music with
Premium Experiences

If you’d like to support my music and treat yourself to a premium experience, I’ve created some really lovely options for you.

I can ship you a beautiful two-disc physical album with cover art by our own Nancy Harms. I’ve also created a book with all of the music and lyrics from the session, plus four transcriptions of improvisations from the album. I’ll gladly sign a copy and ship it you!

The two together make a beautiful matching set! They’re available as physical items or digital downloads at my store.
