Jeremy is a Finalist in APA Competition

Good news! Jeremy is once again selected as one of five pianists nationwide to compete to be the American Pianist Association’s Cole Porter Fellow, which comes along with $50,000 prize money and a free piano! Congrats as well to the other finalists: Glenn Zaleski, Emmet Cohen, Aaron Diehl, and Zach Lapidus. The finals will happen after much practicing in April 2011 in Indianapolis.

In addition, I’ll be leaving Saturday for a little Spring/Summer tour in:

  • 5/14 Schenectady at Yours Jazz Club w/the Britton Brothers
  • 5/15 Rochester at the Bop Shop w/the Britton Brothers
  • 5/19 Rochester at the Memorial Art Gallery for the University of Rochester Garden Party
  • 5/20 Philadelphia at Chris’ with the Britton Brothers
  • 5/21 Baltimore at Andie Musik with the Britton Brothers AND
  • 5/22 Washington D.C. with the Britton Brothers for a private gala

ALSO – I’m done with school. Barring any unforeseen tragedies, I should have my Master’s degree as of next week. Hooray!

AND – I’ll be doing a tour of California w/Graham Dechter, a tribute to the Oscar Peterson Trio (the drumless one with piano, bass, and drums). More on that later.

All the best,

Jeremy

Finalist in Kathleen T. and Philip B. Phillips, M.D. Jazz Piano Competition

On April 10th, I’ll be heading to Pensacola, FL for the third time to compete in the Kathleen T. and Philip B. Phillips, M.D. Jazz Piano Competition. I received 2nd place in the competition twice, in 2006 and 2007, so hopefully I’ll continue that streak (just kidding!).

This is part of a long string of musical endeavors:

  • April 9th: Britton Brother’s CD release w/Chris Potter at Puppets
  • April 10th-11th: Pensacola
  • April 12th-14th: In Indianapolis to perform at Honeywell Center
  • April 15th-16th: in Hartford w/Britton Brothers Band
  • April 17th: At Lilypad in Boston w/Britton Brothers Band
  • April 18th: In Long Island for gig in support of M’Lad Y’Lad
  • April 20th: In Binghamton, NY for gig w/Britton Brothers Band
  • April 24th-26th: In Indianapolis for gig at Indianapolis Music of Art

Hope to see you at one or all of these!

Excitement for the Spring

I’m just back from a fun weekend in Sarasota, FL, although it wasn’t quite as warm as I hoped. So, the Britton Brothers Band finally have a date to celebrate the release of their debut album, “Uncertain Living,” it’s 6 PM at Puppet’s Jazz Bar on April 9th, and will feature the guest artistry of the unbelievable Chris Potter on tenor saxophone!!! Don’t miss a rare chance to see Chris at a local (read: cheap) venue.

Also, if you haven’t seen the article on Fred Hersch in the New York Times’ Sunday magazine, it’s worth checking out, and you can make a scavenger hunt for my name (!) which makes its way into the article.

This weekend, I’m going into the studio with friends Steph Chou, Joel Gombiner, Daniel Ori, Ronen Itzik, and special guest Marcus Printup (!!) to record some of Steph’s new music.

More 2010 Goodness

It’s only a few weeks into 2010, but I already have gigs booked in Florida, California, Massachusetts, Indiana, and, Rochester, with more to come! Check the “itinerary” section of the website.

Also, I’m writing a book of intermediate piano music for FJH music. Keep your eyes out for it!

All the best to keep warm during the winter (even you, Californians)!

Greetings from 2010!

Hi friends,

Just wanted to key you in on two things I’m excited about for the new year:

  1. Playing with Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society on January 8th at Le Poisson Rouge and January 9th at the Jazz Gallery. Darcy’s recent CD, Infernal Machines, has been on just about everybody’s top 10 list, from the New York Times to the Wall Street Journal, to NPR. Check out the “Itinerary” section for more info.
  2. I’m very excited about the trio session I did with Chris Lightcap and Ted Poor this December! The first track you hear on this site is our version of my original, “The Fates,” and I’ve also posted a take of my tune, “Firstness” in the “Listen” section. Please check it out!

A very happy and healthy 2010 to everybody!

Back Home Again…

I’m thrilled to learn that I’ll be performing at the 30th anniversary gala of the American Pianists Association, a fantastic organization that sponsors young pianists. I’m going to be sharing a program with many phenomenal pianists, both classical and jazz. If you’re in the area, be sure to check it out!

Going into the Studio

I’m excited to announce that I’ll be recording a new album at the end of the fall, to be entitled Simple Songs for When the World Seems Strange. I couldn’t be more excited that it will feature the sounds of my absolute favorite musicians: the voice of Jo Lawry, the bass playing of Chris Lightcap and the drumming of Ted Poor. The album, consisting of mostly original songs, will be about half solo piano and about half trio with Jo’s voice sprinkled as an extra treat on a bit of both portions. Recording will take place November 5th and December 10th in Michael Brorby’s studio in Brooklyn, New York.

Some Tidbits

Hey all!

I’m excited to be starting my second year in New York City! Some exciting things happening recently:

  • my episode of Marian McParland’s Piano Jazz has been re-aired on NPR and internationally. A lot of people have apparently heard it this go-around. Thanks to you all for your messages and support
  • posting some new/different tracks up on the website, so make sure to keep your eye on the “listen” section
  • I’m adding a new section to the website: scores! You can check out a few of my tunes if you care to
  • I’ve also added new pictures and updated my bio and resume so that they’re at least somewhat true 🙂
  • the Britton Brothers are getting closer and closer to launching their CD, Uncertain Living. Their website looks awesome: www.TheBrittonBrothers.com. You can also watch a music video of one of the tracks here:

  • I’m playing every week at Dock’s Oyster Bar near Grand Central station. Check them out at www.docksoysterbar.com
  • I’m moving in with a couple of fine musicians: drummer Josh Davis (learn more at www.joshdavismusic.com, and saxophonist Tony Lustig, who’ll be moving to NYC to go to Julliard. We’ll be moving to Columbus Ave between 106th and 107th. Stalkers, I’ll see you there.
  • I’ll be starting teaching lessons at Bergen Yamaha in New Jersey in September. Focus will be on composition and jazz
  • just got back from touring Ireland with my family! Great times!
  • more on some other inchoate projects later…

Jeremy Wins Downbeat Student Award!

Apparently, they’ve awarded me honors for “Outstanding Performance/Original Song” which sounds like two categories, so he feels he should get two awards, but let’s not be greedy. Anyway, the award was given for Jeremy’s track “Little Love Song,” which you can hear in the media player of this site.

In other news: I was invited to write for Clavier Companion magazine (yes, THE Clavier Companion), so keep your eye out for future articles.
